Rochester Aardvarks RFC vs. Pittsburgh RFC
|
Welcome to the home-page of the
Rochester Rugby Football Club. The Aardvarks as we are known train and play in
the city of Rochester, New York. The Aardvarks are a talented rugby club
with players ranging in age from 21 to 50 from all walks of life
including students, management, finance, education, marketing, engineering,
science, administration, sales, and medicine. The rugby club has
been proudly representing the City of Rochester nationally since 1966.
The Aardvarks field two Men's teams that
compete in two Divisions. The club competes as a Division II Men's Team in the Allegheny Rugby Union within the Midwest Territory
and fields a Division III Men's Team in the New York State Rugby Union within the Northeast Territory. This affords
our players two distincts options for particpation in the game and allows more game time per player. Selection for
the Division II side is dependent on athleticism, experience, finances, and commitment due to the the high level of rugby
and requirments to travel regionally. While the Division III team competes in the local area and serves to develop our
aspiring Division II athletes utilizing experienced rugby veterans that cannot commit to the time requirements of Division II play.
The Aardvarks are the sole owner of Aardvark
Park, one of the only privately owned Rugby facilities in New York State, and one of a select few in the nation. The facility currently
has a restroom accommidations, a permanent building used for primarily for equipment storage, but has non-potable water, gas and electric. The two fields have irrigiation and permanent uprights and measure 144m x 70m and 120m x 60m. We are in the process of raising capital for the construction of a club house which will
include banquet facilites, bathrooms, gym, locker rooms, showers, offices, bar, kitchen and dorm style rooms. Other planned enhancements to the Park include field lighting, bleachers, and an electronic scoreboard.
The league season begins in August and concludes with USA Rugby National Playoffs in June if qualified. The team trains during the winter months in preperation for the spring playoffs. Our schedule typically includes fixtures against teams from Canada, Detroit, Indianapolis
Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Cleveland, Buffalo, and Chicago. We will also particpate in various other local, national and international tournaments, including the largest Rugby tournament in the Eastern Hemisphere, the Saranac Lake CAN-AM Rugby Tournament.
The Aardvarks are a very active club with a year-round
schedule of training and social events. The highlight of
our year is the Annual Green and Gold Rugby Game held each year in June matching those members under 30 versus those "experienced" players over 30. Other annual social events include our yearly Angry Bean Bikes for Beer Pub Crawl, Clam Bake, Golf Tournament, Turkey Gobbler, and President's Dinner.
The club is willing to play touring sides at the men's level and can help arrange Women's, High School and/or College level fixtures if necessary. We are willing and able to host teams at our pitch and show our guests a great
time in the local area. Rochester and Western New York has an abundence of Rugby Teams at all levels within a 2 hours drive is a great place to
visit in the summer with some great sights and fantastic
outdoor activities to keep you occupied when not playing.
